The question we get asked a lot is “Why in the world do you want to start homesteading?”. Let’s rewind a few years ago, shall we?
It all started with us changing our diets and the way we lived. We started eating REAL food and eliminating the chemicals in our home. ( This is the point in time that my husband said I turned into a“granola“; or maybe it was when I started using clay toothpaste ). We read numerous books and started following blogs about raising your own meat, owning dairy animals and even gardening; but simply reading about it just wasn’t cutting it! I would replay Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie audio books over and over; daydreaming of moving away from the city. The thought of raising our own meat, making butter and cheese, having healthy hens that would supply us with an over abundance of eggs and providing ourselves with produce from our very own garden, seemed like a dream.
The idea of ” Urban Homesteading ” came up and I was like ” Yeah, I can totally do this right where we live!”. So we made a garden in our little backyard. It was a success! But it wasn’t enough. I wanted chickens. I told my husband out of jest, ” If the HOA tells us that we cannot have backyard chickens, then we’re moving!”. Needless to say, after asking my HOA and them giving me a big, flat out “No”, we pondered the thought of selling our house.
So what did we do?
We sold our house of course, duh!
BYE BYE TALL CEILINGS!
BYE BYE BELOVED STRIPED WALL!
BYE BYE INFINITY FIREPLACE!
BYE BYE SPACIOUS MASTER BEDROOM
BYE BYE BEAUTIFUL BLACK AND WHITE STAIRS!
( This is the point in the story where my husband loves to tell everyone that it all began with chickens ). Which is not so much the case, not SO much.
We sold our wonderful house in the city and bought a 1940’s fixer upper with almost 5 acres in the MIDDLE.OF.NOWHERE!
The Inspired Prairie is preview into our lives as we make our homesteading dreams, into a reality. We will be capturing it all as we learn to become farmers on our ( mini ) prairie.
