New Kids On The Prairie
That’s right! We have new kids on the prairie… GOAT KIDS, that is!
Fern had her babies yesterday! And can you believe I missed the birth!!??!! AHHHHH I am so mad!!!!! But on a happier note: Fern kidded all by herself without complications!
Most women when they are pregnant pack an overnight or baby bag for the hospital. I, had a goat birthing bag packed and ready by the back door for a month! I was well equipped and ready to help assist in the birth where I was needed. And quite possibly, be all up in Fern’s business back there. But apparently she had other ideas.
Yesterday as always, I went out and checked her and I noticed that her bags were looking really full. So, I was like, ” Yey maybe she will have the babies this weekend! “. It was a Wednesday and we had church in the evening.
When we got home from church it was close to 9:45pm. As usual, we do what we always do when we get home. We drive our car around our property, lock up the chickens, do a head count of the chickens, check for eggs and lastly, check on the goats.
It was dark so we couldn’t see much, but Mr. Hubs went to the goat fence. All of a sudden he yells, ” There are babies!!” and he literally took off running around the goat gate. You would have thought there was a fire, he ran so fast! Haha actually, later on, I asked Mr. Hubs why his arms were moving so fast, but his body wasn’t 🙂 .
Anyways, when he said that to me and took off running..
I didn’t believe him!
But I ran after him and while running, I’m yelling, ” sStop it, stop it, you’re lying ( not that he lies, but I was caught up in the moment )! Are you messing with me!!?? “.
We unlock the gate, run over to where the goats were and lo and behold…..
They were both super dry and walking around, which told me they were born awhile ago, and there were twins; one boy and one girl!
This is Fern’s second kidding and she is being such a good mama. She is caring for them, and licking them like she should to create a bond. She is letting them drink milk and she is doing so well!
As soon as we figured out , yes indeed she had she babies.. we jumped into gear. Mr. Hubs ran and got fresh straw bedding and hay for food. We needed to move Fern and the babies to the birthing pen so they can be together without disturbance from Charlotte. I went inside and made Fern her herbal drink to help her body after kidding ( yes I am weird ). I mixed it with a bit of molasses ( for an energy boost ) and gave it to her. She drank so much and was very thirsty. I checked her back-end and she still had some mucous hanging out. I was hoping for a third baby, but nope.
Mama and babies are all doing great and the babies are already playing and jumping around and melting our hearts! Enjoy these pictures of the cuties. Btw, they look just like their Daddy ( Stank Nasty ) is his name. Haha don’t ask.
Give me the milk!
Let’s play, sis!
Look at them teats!
Aren’t they adorable?!
