We’ve all been there.
You boil one dozen eggs to make those delicious deviled eggs for your get-together.
The eggs have finally finished cooling and you begin to start peeling the first hard-boiled egg. As you crack the hard-boiled egg and attempt to peel away the shell, you realize that your eggs are NOT peeling right!
You peel and peel, and the egg itself insists on coming off with the shell.
In the end, you are left with a plate of hard-boiled eggs that look like they’ve been in an egg massacre.
To serve or not to serve the deviled eggs? That is the question.
Oh, let me tell you, I’ve been there so many times.
Especially for us homesteaders.
Since we have our own chickens, this means our eggs are really fresh. And most people know that farm-fresh eggs don’t always peel right. And I’ve been so frustrated with the way my hard-boiled eggs peel, or the lack thereof.
Plus, we love to hard boil eggs and keep them in the fridge for a quick snack during the week, so having easy to peel eggs is kind of a must around here.

The only way I could sometimes achieve easy peeling eggs, was to let the eggs get a few weeks old, and then they would peel more nicely.
But who wants to wait for that?!
And the word on the street is, the fresher the eggs, the harder they are to peel, which is NO BUENO for us homesteaders who have an overabundance of farm-fresh eggs every day.
Now, let’s be honest… we’ve all seen those hard-boiled egg hacks out there, right? Everyone claims to have the best hack for boiling eggs.

Common hard-boiled eggs hacks
- Baking soda in water

Using an Instant Pot is seriously the simplest and best method out there for hard-boiling eggs because you only need to cook them for 4 minutes in the pressure cooker, and then do a quick ice bath in ice water before you peel the cooked eggs.
The ice bath helps cool the eggs down quickly and also helps release the shell from the eggs.
Now this is what I call a great hard boiled egg hack to hard boil the perfect eggs!
What’s the big hype about the Instant Pot?

I’m the first to admit that I was also skeptical of the Instant Pot when it first launched, and I even waited a few years before I caved in and bought one.
But now that I did, I can’t believe I lived so long without one!
Because the Instant Pot is a pressure cooker, it cooks food (in this case, eggs) really quickly.
How to cook hard-boiled eggs in your Instant Pot?
Here is the Instant Pot Recipe for boiling eggs.
- Place your metal steamer basket or rack in the Instant Pot. The rack usually comes with your Instant Pot when you purchase it, or else you can purchase the Instant Pot steamer baskets HERE.
- Add 1 cup of water. This is essential, as the Instant Pot does not work correctly without some sort of liquid.
- Place one dozen eggs on an egg rack, aka the steaming rack. Note: I’ve done more eggs at a time with the same great results. You can use small eggs or large eggs. Most of my farm-fresh eggs are smaller than store-bought eggs, but I do have a lot of large eggs as well. If using really large eggs, you might not be able to fit a full dozen in there, so add as many as you can fit.
- Place the lid on your Instant Pot and turn your valve to SEALING before beginning the cooking process.
- Pressure cook on HIGH pressure for 4 minutes. If you would like to make soft-boiled eggs, try pressure cooking them for 2 minutes. Soft boiled eggs have a mildly runny yolk still. I like fully cooked eggs, so I do 4 minutes. I have also found that cooking the eggs for 4 minutes results in a perfectly cooked egg yolk. I’m not a big fan of a runny yolk, personally.
- Once the timer is up, release the pressure from the valve on the Instant Pot and place your eggs in ice water for a quick ice bath. By placing your cooked eggs in ice water, it helps the eggs cool down quickly and helps the shell release from the egg.
TIP- Be sure not to use cracked eggs as using cracked eggs will result in your hard boiling eggs spilling out of the shell during the pressure cooking process.
How long to hard boil eggs in an Instant Pot for the perfect egg?

I cook my eggs for 4 minutes on the high-pressure setting in my Instant Pot, and then release the pressure once the time is up.
If you want a soft boiled egg yolk, try two minutes and then release the pressure once the timer is up.
What to do after the hard-boiled eggs are cooked?

After you release the pressure on your Instant Pot, fill a a large bowl with ice.
Place your hard boiled eggs on top of the ice.
Add enough cold water until all the eggs are covered, and mix them around in the ice water.
Let them cool in the ice bath for about 10-15 minutes.
Peel the eggs once cooled, and now you can enjoy your hard-boiled eggs in your favorite recipes without them looking like they’ve been through the shredder.
