Maybe you’re like me…
Your a mom, a homemaker, or a grandma, and you rarely have time for self care.
Spa days seem like a far off distant fairytale, and taking a bath without being interrupted 7 times by your 4-year-old doesn’t even exist, does it?
So we tend to let some things slip… like our skin.
If you’re anything like me, your skin always seems to feel dry and sometimes even rough or bumpy.
Not to mention the bottom of those feet girl…yikes!
We won’t even go there!
And because I don’t have time for a spa day or any fancy body and skin treatments, I decided to whip up my own DIY homemade salt body scrub.
Partially because I had some rose petal-infused oil that I made and wanted to use, and the other reason is that my skin needed some serious exfoliation. And all the mama’s say… AMEN!
What is a homemade salt scrub for the body?

Salt body scrubs are a great way to exfoliate your skin to soften and get rid of the dead and dry skin lurking around. Which, hello, us mama’s need!
Similar to sugar body scrubs, but instead made with salt instead of sugar, which I’ll explain in a bit.
Now, of course, there are so many body scrubs you can purchase in stores and online (costing you around $8-$40 a jar), but, making your own DIY salt scrub is so incredibly easy, and frugal, that you will never want to spend money on those expensive scrubs again.
PLUS! They make the cutest homemade gifts for your girlfriends and female family members. Think- Mother’s Day gift!
You’re welcome 🥰
Why are salt scrubs great for the skin?

As I mentioned above, salt scrubs are a way to exfoliate your skin, but why would one want to exfoliate their skin in the first place?
Exfoliation is a term we are all familiar with and know about, but yet, we don’t do it that often… or at least I don’t.
However, when we exfoliate our skin, it helps us shed and get rid of those dead skin cells that are clinging on for dear life and then helps encourage natural skin cell renewal.
And in first grade English it means…
Scrub off the dead, dull and dry skin…
…and in return
You get more new and radiant skin to shine through!
Sounds fun right?
How do I make my own homemade, moisturizing salt body scrub?

Making your own homemade salt scrub is so easy and technically only requires two ingredients if you want to keep things simple.
All you need is 1 cup of salt of your choice and 1/3 cup of a carrier oil of your choice.
What kind of salt to use for making homemade salt body scrub?

This is really up to you, and I’d say for a starter to just use what you have one hand, with the exception of iodized table salt. Iodized table salt has been refined so much and has been stripped of all the good minerals, so don’t use that.
And yes, salt has minerals that are very good for your skin, and we want them and need them in our body scrubs.
Salts to use for homemade salt body scrubs:
- Sea salt (like this white sea salt found HERE)
- Pink Himalayan sea salt (our favorite to cook and season with at home, and it’s what we have on hand at all times.)
- Dead sea salt (I really want to try this next time!!)
- Epsom salt (Epsom salts are also really great to keep on hand)
- Kosher salt
- Black Lava Salt (Black lava sea salt is infused with activated charcoal and makes a powerful detoxifier. How cool would this be in a salt scrub?!)
What kind of oils to use in my homemade salt body scrub?

The type of oil you use in your DIY salt scrub also depends on your personal choice.
Do you know of a particular oil that your skin loves? Then use that one.
If you have sensitive skin and certain oils feel too oily after using them on your skin, then don’t use that one.
Great oils to use in DIY salt scrub recipe:
- Olive oil
- Jojoba oil
- Sunflower oil
- Coconut oil
- Fractionated Coconut oil
- Sweet Almond oil
- Grapeseed Oil
Salt Scrub vs Sugar Scrub- What’s the difference?

Simply put, a sugar scrub is less abrasive on the skin. So if you already have soft, radiant skin, then a salt scrub may not be needed for your body.
I love using sugar scrubs on places with more sensitive skin such as my hands and lips.
Now, salt scrubs are more abrasive and a bit better at exfoliating that stubborn, dry skin of ours. Therefore salt scrubs are great for using on dry and rough skin, like your arms, legs, feet, back, etc. It’ll be too rough for your face though.
How to use salt scrubs on your skin

To use your homemade sea salt scrub- Scoop out as much as you need for one single-use, and then rub gently in circular motions on your skin.
Once you’re done, rinse with warm water, or soak in the bath for a moisturizing salt bath soak. Can we call that a spa day?!

Optional Scents and add-ins for your sea salt scrub

Depending on your skin, mood, or scent likings, the possibilities are really endless when it comes to scent options to add in your salt scrub recipe.
Some common salt scrub scents are:
**Tip- If using citrus oils, wait a few hours before going out into the sun if the skin will be exposed!**
- Orange essential oil
- Lemon essential oil
- Lime essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Peppermint essential oil (great for a foot scrub)
- Rose petal infused oil
- …. or another flower essential oil like geranium
- You can also add dried herbs or flowers (I added lavender in one batch and dried rose petals in another batch), honey (which is great for the skin), or a few drops of vitamin E oil for extra moisturizer.
When choosing scents to add to your homemade scrub, just choose your favorite essential oil and start with that.
**In my DIY salt body scrubs, I did one with lavender essential oil and dried lavender buds, and then rose-infused oil in the other batch with dried rose petals. **
How to store your salt body scrub

Keep your sea salt scrub dry and in an airtight container in a cool, dark spot.
I like to store all my homemade products out of light and sunlight, so I usually store my homemade skincare products underneath sinks or in cabinets.

How to keep your body scrub, mold-free
Since this scrub is made without water, it doesn’t need a preservative to stay fresh.
However, when scooping out some of your salt scrub, you’ll want to make sure you don’t get water in the jar, as it will cause the salt scrub to spoil.
To avoid getting water into your salt scrub, just scoop out a few tablespoons (or however much you will need for your single-use) out with a spoon before you get in the shower or bath.
Note of caution-
**Because this salt scrub has oil in it, it can and will make your shower floor slippery, so be careful!**
